Drake announced the signing of his first female artist to OVO Sound on his social media accounts on Friday, with the release of her first single. Naomi Sharon is her name, and the single is entitled, “Another Life”. Also with it came the release of Bonus track, “Celestial”.
At first listen, the Dutch Caribbean roots artist’s music immediately screamed “Pop Drake-ish”, and new age Sade to me. You may say too early for the Sade tag, I say nope – just in time. Drake is obviously making a great chess move by signing Naomi, and clearly is trying to bring out the side of R&B/Soul music that has been direly missing in music today. Naomi Sharon brings back the seductive yet conservative qualities of womanhood through music; her outer style showcases the fact that women can be sexy and feminine without having to show it all.
Naomi is her name, smooth and sultry is definitely her game, as in her Chart Metric biography, she coins her music as being:
“drained with sensuality and is luscious, warm, modern with a hint of nostalgia. It also comes with a message. Inspired by the artists of the past she takes these sounds, brings them into the now, to create the future. Her mission is to reinstate the female powers that are sensuality and sexuality in music and beyond and to be a leading example of body positivity and self-love. Spiritually and physically.” – Chart Metric bio
Let’s just call her “The First Lady of OVO”. Although her debut day numbers were not impressive, ending the day at the 112th position on the iTunes R&B/Soul chart and fairly low follow numbers across her social media accounts and Spotify, I know that sometimes these things take some time. Once she sets on her promo run, with Drake and the OVO Sound marketing team fully backing her, those numbers will rise. She definitely has a bright future ahead. Let’s stay tuned to where the journey takes her.
We believe in her so much, that we’ve created an R&B playlist surrounding her new sound while also paying tribute to the subtle Sade hints in her music. “No Ordinary R&B” playlist can be found on Spotify.
Congratulations Naomi!
Be sure to follow her on all platforms.
