Kota the Friend recently explained to fans why his new album ‘No Rap on Sunday’ is not on streaming services.
He said that when he drops an alubm directly on streaming services, “it kind of dilutes the album experience.”
He further explained,
“…It devalues this music that I worked so hard to create.
It’s like fast food, you know…”
He said that he wants his fans and listeners to have a chance to “ingest the music differently”.
He is selling his album on a website called Even, and which has a service that allows the fans to specify how much they want to pay to hear the album.
One cool perk of buying the album using this method, is that when Kota goes on tour, everyone that bought the album on Even will be bumped up to a “Meet & Greet”, no matter what type of ticket they have.
The immediate noticeable downsides to this method is that fans cannot add his new songs to playlists on their favorite streaming platforms, the songs cannot go viral as easily and generate a buzz on social media platforms such as Instagram and TikTok. It also makes it harder for Copyright Match software used on platforms such as YouTube to detect the use of his music in videos.
However, sometimes the value of the creation itself that is perceived by fans outweighs the downsides. He thanked his fans for purchasing the album on Even and was very grateful.
We wish the best of luck to Kota the Friend and much continued success.
